Data Explorer overview

Data Explorer is an interactive, browser-based analysis module. It complements report authoring and dashboards; it does not generate JRXML or replace JasperReports.

Editions

Data Explorer is compiled into the Professional package and is allowed before a license is activated. It is not in the Open Source package. Dashboards are a separate feature (dashboards) and stay off until a Report Server Professional license is valid. JDBC datasource types are not the edition boundary. See the compatibility matrix.

Open the UI

URL Purpose
/explorer Sidebar + widget canvas
/hubs/data-explorer Hub entry

Navigation: Reports → Data Explorer → Data → Scheduling → Administration.

Shared dataset

The left sidebar defines the filtered dataset used by all widgets:

  • Datasource / Table / Columns or Report Query mode
  • Filters / Sort / Row limit
  • Add Widget: Summary, Statistics, Table, Chart, Map, Spatial Analysis, Crosstab / Pivot, Filter

Group-by and aggregates live on Chart / Summary / Crosstab / Statistics widgets — not as global query transforms that rewrite every widget.

Dataset modes

Mode Behavior
Table Connection → Table → Run
Report Query Execute a report’s main JRXML <query> via Jasper, then explore the cached result set

Subdatasets and layout are ignored in Report Query mode. The last mode choice is remembered in localStorage.

Engines

Official interactive support: PostgreSQL and MySQL/MariaDB.

Other datasource types return a clear message that Interactive Data Explorer is optimized for PostgreSQL and MySQL — use Report Builder for those datasources.

Spatial Analysis execution today requires PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
